There are four main regions in Australia where the true black coal is unearthed. One of those is the Surat Region in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. Atop the Artesian Basin, which holds the coal, are many towns and regional centres, one of them being Surat which was named by the surveyor after his former place of residence in Bombay Province, India.
